The typical tourist season runs May through September, with peak season being June through August. The summer months are best for sightseeing, hiking in the Alps and attending festivals. Although Croatian, Hungarian, Slovenian, and Turkish are spoken by the various minority groups in Austria, nearly all people in the country speak German. The dialect of German is Bavarian, sometimes called Austro-Bavarian. Many Austrians speak or understand English, especially in tourist areas.
